I’ve been following The Secret Library Book Blog for a while now and when the opportunity came to read an ARC of a valkyrie being immune to vampire bites, well I couldn’t help but sign up! I’ve since followed the author on Twitter and Instagram and signed up to her newsletter. Make of that what you will 🙂
About the Book
Rowan McQuaid should be dead.
Valkyries don’t survive vampire bites. But after releasing a tomb full of rabid vampires, Rowan is still breathing. Her survival means one thing: somehow, she is immune.
When witches are slaughtered in their homes, Rowan discovers the vampires are hell-bent on killing the descendants of those who imprisoned them. And every drop of blood spilled is on her hands.
Forced to team up with the mysterious vampire Nate Hallewell, Rowan must find and stop the rogue vampires before they kill every witch in south east England.
Fans of The Vampire Diaries and A Discovery of Witches will love this gritty, action-packed adventure by USA Today Bestselling Author, Rosie Wylor-Owen.

My Review
Valkyries, curses, witches, vampires, magical law enforcement and entombed vampires breaking out – this book has it all.
I enjoyed the twists to magical society and how it is a big part of the world, yet still hidden from humans.
Rowan’s attitude toward life, her work and her family’s interference were well-defined and believable. It also made her endearing. Rowan’s valkyrie powers intrigue me and I’d like to see her use it more. I’m intrigued by her immunity to vampire venom and all the implications of the use of her blood.
Michael and his band of psychotic vampires somehow using magic and trying to take over the world makes for a great contrast to the vampires at the Embassy. I liked how Rowan moved past the prejudices against vampires ingrained in her upbringing to come to care for her new friends and to defend them.
I liked the subtle mirror held up to society and their prejudices against a specific group of people based on fear.
I like Nate and his backstory seems to be full of things we can only guess at. The same with everybody at the Embassy.
I thoroughly enjoyed Rowan’s story and can’t wait to spend more time with her and her various friends.
Highly recommended for fans of urban fantasy, witches, vampires and sassy valkyries.
*I received an ARC from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Trigger warning: blood, gore, abduction, murder, torture, prejudice
Shelves: urban fantasy, folklore, witches, vampires, new adult, coming of age
Go ahead and get this book — it was a fun read. Have you read anything from this author before? What do you think of valkyries dying of vampire bites but one being mysteriously immune?

I love finding new books from book reviewer blogs. I like that this one has a magical world hidden in the human one. I like those kind of stories.
They are awesome 🙂
